Sitting in her corner of the couch, she closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep. Lying next to her was a notepad with some scribbled messages. Written on the top of the paper were the words, stationary store, and next to that, pink journal.

Driving down the freeway, listening to Garth Brooks crooning a country western song, Cissy leaned her head back against the seat and looked at her youngest son. The animation in his voice tickled Cissy’s heart. Their conversation was circling around his new job. Just days before, he had signed a contract with a low-budget film as an assistant director.
“So, tell me about this new film,” Cissy asked.
“Well, I know the pay will be low, and the hours atrocious, but I need those hours to get into the union. The film is being produced by a well-known director. I don’t think there are any famous actors, but I like the script; and I think it has a chance at the Sundance festival next year. The storyline is a hot one and moves along very quickly.”
“I’m glad you have found a career you are passionate about. Youth is on your side, so give it the best shot you’ve got and explore all the avenues. Experience is the key to success.” Cissy leaned over and patted his hand.
“Thanks for your support, Mom. It means a lot to me.” He smiled broadly.
“What are mothers for? I just want to write your acceptance speech for you, when you win your first Oscar!” Cissy laughed.
“You got it! Just keep it under three minutes, no foul language, and nothing emotional that would bring the audience to tears.” He took a hold of her hand and squeezed it.
“I only want to write the first one. For the rest of the speeches, you’re on your own!” she teased back.
The car pulled into the hospital parking lot. The weather was a typical California day, with the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky. As they walked out of the underground parking, Cissy leaned her head back and let the sun kiss her cheeks.
It was a typical Monday, and the hospital seemed to be buzzing with patients and visitors. Slowly, they walked through the lobby. On their way to the elevator, they stopped to browse in the gift shop. Cissy enjoyed exploring the interesting merchandise that was as unique as the hospital. Ryan picked himself up a magazine and then they continued to the wing of the hospital designated for the chemotherapy patients.
Cissy would never admit it, but she was terrified. The reality of the day was causing an emotional surge of fear. Facing the unknown was always like that. Her heart was beating a mile a minute, and her legs felt like rubber. Without a word, she continued to stroll down the hall, hand in hand with Ryan.
They entered a room and in the corner was a large check-in desk with a young woman sitting behind it. Ryan sat down as Cissy walked up and signed her name on the clipboard.
